Romance Academy seeks to break the cycle of damaging relationships, by giving young people the tools to make positive choices around their sexual and relational health. Through structured weekly sessions, team-building activities and a shared pledge, young people gain a supportive community that allows them to set healthy goals, grow in self-esteem and confidence to critique the sex-negative attitudes of their peer groups and wider culture.

The project began life as part of a BBC2 documentary mini-series called ‘No Sex Please We’re Teenagers’ in 2005. The programmes (and subsequently the Romance Academy intervention project) were created to address the underlying causes of risky youth behaviour such as poor self-esteem, low aspirations and lack of positive family/community life. Through a unique 14-week intervention project, 12 young people explored, amongst other things, the value of healthy relationships. Romance Academy is now a national charity that trains youth workers to run their own Romance Academies, empowering young people with the tools to make intelligent choices; thus helping them to avoid the negative impact that early and risky sexual behaviour could have on their lives and wider society.

The Romance Academy material addresses the whole of life and relationships and is flexible, giving young people the space to be heard and to raise the issues they want discussed. Access to accurate information is essential and Romance Academy encourage input where required from local experts, on topics such as drugs and alcohol, as well as sexual health.

“Romance Academy helped me to see that I don’t have to do whatever a guy wants; I have a right to say no. For the first time in my life I realised that I am precious and worth more than I previously thought of myself.” - 16 year old girl

“Romance Academy is an essential tool for Youth Workers! It has equipped us to address and talk about these hot topics with young people with confidence, knowledge and understanding. Romance Academy has taught us what it means to really love and support the young people we work with and what a fantastic difference that has made in their lives.” - Zoe (Romance Academy Leader, Wirral)
